ตอนนี้ คงเป็นอีก รูปแบบหนึ่งของการดำเนินชีวิต ที่เราต้องมาเผชิญ ชีวิต ภายในรั้วของมหาวิทยาลัย ใจหนึ่งเราก็สนุก อีกใจหนึ่งก็คิดถึงเพื่อนๆ ที่เราเคยร่วมทุกข์ ร่วมสุขกันมา ความพยายามของเรา ทำให้เราได้เข้ามา อยู่มนรั้วของมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์คณะศิลปศาสตร์และวิทยาศาสตร์ เรียน เอกภาษาอังกฤษ และเรียนโท ภาษาฝรั่งเศส เรายังแอบงก เรียนภาษา เกาหลี เพิ่มอีก 1 ภาษา
ทำไงได้ คนมันชอบเรียนภาษานี่นา ได้เรียนภาษาฝรั่งเศสรู้สึกชอบมากเลย ตื้นเต้นมากเพราะเราเพิ่งจะรู้คะแนนสอบภาษาฝรั่งเศส เรานั่งอ่านนั่งสือเตรียมตัวสอบ ถึง ตี 4 เพราะคือการสอบภาษาฝรั่งเศสครั้งแรกในรั้วมหาวิทยลัย พอคะแนนออกมา ปรากฎว่า เราได้ คะแนนพูด เต็ม 15 ได้ 10.25 อิอิ แต่คะแนน แกรมม่า 60 ได้ 60 เต็ม เย้ เย้ ดีใจมาก แต่แย่ตรงสอบพูด เฮ้อ แต่ก็ดีใจที่เราสามารถ ทำได้ ต่อไปเราต้องเตรียมสำหรับการสอบปลายภาคที่กำลังจะมาถึง...แต่เราคิดว่า คนเราถ้าใจไม่ท้อที่จะทำอะไร เชื่อว่าสิ่งนั้นจะสำเร็จอย่างแน่นอนคนเรานั้นถ้าตั้งใจที่จะทำอะไรแล้ว เชื่อว่าสิ่งที่เราหวังจะง่ายไปซะทุกเรื่อง...

คุณค่าและสาระของวันสงกรานต์

จากภาพรวมของกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ในวันสงกรานต์จะเห็นได้ว่า สงกรานต์เป็นประเพณีที่งดงาม อ่อนโยน เอื้ออาทร และเต็มไปด้วยบรรยากาศของความกตัญญู ความเคารพซึ่งกันและกัน เป็นประเพณีที่ให้ความสำคัญของความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างเพื่อนมนุษย์ในสังคม
โดยใช้น้ำเป็นสื่อในการเชื่อมความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกัน ซึ่งต่างจากเทศกาลแห่งน้ำที่หน่วยงานบางแห่งดำเนินการเพื่อสร้างจุดขาย สร้างรายได้เข้าประเทศ ซึ่งอาจสร้างความเข้าใจผิดให้เกิดขึ้นแก่คนทั่วโลก ไม่เว้นแต่คนไทยด้วยกันเอง ให้เกิดความเข้าใจที่คลาดเคลื่อน และหลุดลอยไปจากสาระและคุณค่าเดิมของประเพณีสงกรานต์ไปทุกที

ประเพณีที่ถือปฏิบัติและสืบทอมกันมาอย่างยาวนาน เช่น ประเพณีสงกรานต์นี้ จึงย่อมมีความหมายและมีคุณค่าต่อผู้ปฎิบัติ ชุมชน และสังคมเป็นอย่างยิ่ง กล่าวคือ :
สงกรานต์-คุณค่าต่อครอบครัว
- วันสงกรานต์เป็นวันแห่งความรัก ความผูกผันในครอบครัว อย่างแท้จริง พ่อแม่จะเตรียมเสื้อผ้าใหม่พร้อมเครื่องประดับให้ลูกหลานไปทำบุญ ลูกหลานก็จะเตรียมเสื้อผ้าเครื่องนุ่งห่ม ให้ผู้ใหญ่ได้สวมใส่หลักการรดน้ำขอพร
เมื่อถึงวันสงกรานต์ ทุกคนจะหาโอกาสกลับบ้านไปหาพ่อแม่และญาติผู้ใหญ่ รดน้ำขอพรเพื่อเป็นสิริมงคลในการเริ่มต้นปีใหม่ และเป็นกำลังใจกันและกันในการดำรงชีวติอยู่ต่อไป
- วันสงกรานต์เป็นวันแห่งการแสดงความกตัญญู โดยการปรนนิบัติต่อพ่อแม่และผู้มีพระคุณที่มีชีวิตอยู่ และทำบุญอุทิศส่วนกุศลให้แก่ผู้ที่ล่วงลับไปแล้ว

นี่แหละ...คืนสู่เหย้าศิษย์เก่าชาวยอแซฟ

วันนี้เราดีใจมาก ที่ได้ไปร่วมงาน "คืนสู่เหย้าศิษย์เก่า ชาวยอแซฟ" สนุกมาก และเต็มไปด้วยความประทับใจ ได้เจออาจารย์ที่เคยสอนเรา ตอนเราเรียนอยู่ที่นั่น เจอรุ่นพี่ และเจอเพื่อนๆ ซึ่งแต่ละคนมากัน จำแถบไม่ได้ วันนี้เขารวมรุ่นแรกจนถึงรุ่นปัจจุบัน คือรุ่นที่ 39 ที่เพิ่งจบไปหมาดๆ ก็เท่ากับรุ่นเราที่ ราชินี รุ่น 49 พอเข้าไปในงานเหมือนเราได้กลับบ้าน อีกครั้ง ซึ่งเปลี่ยนไปมาก ทั้งห้องเรียน โรงอาหาร รวมทั้ง สนามเด็กเล่น
พอเข้าไปถึง ก็มีคนเรียกชื่อเรา บอกว่า "ไอ้ตาล" พอเราหันไปมอง อ้าว อ.เก่านี่เอง สอนเราตอนเราเรียน Summer ตอน ป.6 ความรู้สึกเราอ่ะ ดีใจมากเลย ที่จำเราได้ด้วย แล้วก็เจออีกหลายท่าน ที่เราทึ่งกวานี้ก็คือ อาจารย์แจ๋ว ที่สอนเรา
ตอนเราอยู่ อนุบาล 3 ยังจำเราได้ อยากร้องไห้มากๆ เพราะตลอดระยะเวลาที่เราเรียน อนุบาล ประถม เราเองก็คลุกคลี กับ โรงเรียนยอแซฟอุปถัมภ์ ตลอดมา นี่แหละ ที่เราเรียกได้ว่า เหมือนบ้าน เหมือนครอบครัว ขอบคุณทุกๆคนที่จำเราได้
ขอบคุณสำหรับทุกสิ่งทุกอย่าง และที่สำคัญ ขอบคุณฟ้า ที่พาเรามารู้จักกัน...............
ยังไงเราเองก็ต้องขอบคุณสถาบันดีดี ที่ทำให้เราได้มีวันนี้ วันที่เราภาคภูมิใจมาก

มงคลอาหารไหว้ตรุษจีน

กับข้าวไหว้บรรพบุรุษทำไมมักเหมือนกันทุกครั้ง เช่น ลูกชิ้นปลาผัดต้นกระเทียม เป๊าฮื้อน้ำแดง ขนมกุ๊ยช่าย ฯลฯ เป็นข้อบังคับเหมือน หมู เป็ด ไก่ หรือเปล่า คำตอบคือ เมนูกับข้าวไหว้เจ้า หลายบ้านจะคล้ายๆ กัน เพราะนิยมทำกับข้าวที่มีความหมายมงคล ก็เหมือนที่คนไทยนิยมมีขนมมงคล 9 อย่างในเครื่องขันหมาก มีขนมทองหยิบ ทองหยอด ในงานทำบุญขึ้นบ้านใหม่อย่างไรก็ตามแต่ละบ้านอาจไหว้เมนูไม่เหมือนกัน และการแปลความหมายก็อาจต่างกัน การคิดเหมือนคิดต่าง การทำเท่ากันหรือไม่เท่ากันในเรื่องธรรมเนียมของแต่ละบ้านนั้นเป็นเรื่องธรรมดาเพราะคนจีนและคนไทยต่างก็มีพื้นความคิดที่เหมือนกันว่า กับข้าวคาวหวานที่ใช้ไหว้หรือทำบุญ นิยมเลือกที่มีความหมายมงคล

• เนื่องจากการทำงานบ้าน เช่น การซักล้าง หรือ การกวาดบ้านปัดฝุ่น จะเป็นการขับไล่ความโชคดีออกไป ดังนั้นการทำความสะอาดบ้านจึงควรเริ่มทำตั้งแต่ก่อนที่วันขึ้นปีใหม่จะมาถึง

• ควรระมัดระวังในการใช้คำพูดที่มีความหมายไปในทางลบรวมทั้งหลีกเลี่ยงการโต้เถียงกัน คำที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการเจ็บป่วยหรือความตายเป็นคำที่เราควรหลีกเลี่ยงในวันขึ้นปีใหม่

ส.ค.ส.แผ่นแรกของไทย พบหลักฐานว่ามีขึ้นใน พ.ศ. 2409 สมัยรัชกาลที่ 4 บนแผ่นการ์ดเป็นลายพระหัตถ์เขียนอวยพรที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ทำขึ้นสำหรับพระราชทานคณะทูตานุทูต ข้าราชบริพาร และมิตรสหายชาวต่างประเทศ เนื่องในวาระวันขึ้นปีใหม่สากล เมื่อวันจันทร์ที่ 1 มกราคม ค.ศ. 1866 บัตรอวยพรอันประเมินค่ามิได้อายุ 140 ปีแผ่นนี้ พบในร้าน Maggs Bros ร้านหนังสือเก่าแก่ ใจกลางกรุงลอนดอนแล้วผู้ซื้อกลับมาคืนสู่แผ่นดินมาตุภูมิ ก็คือ ธวัชชัย ตั้งศิริวานิช นักวิชาการอิสระผู้ศึกษาเกี่ยวกับประวัติศาสตร์สยามผ่านเอกสารของชาวตะวันตก เจ้าของผลงานเล่มล่าสุด "กรุงศรีอยุธยาในแผนที่ฝรั่ง" (ซึ่งนักประวัติศาสตร์ชื่อดัง ดร.ชาญวิทย์ เกษตรศิริ กล่าวว่า "หนังสือเล่มนี้จะขยายพรมแดนแห่งความรู้ว่าด้วยอดีตของสยามประเทศ")
ธวัชชัย อธิบายว่าส.ค.ส.เก่าแก่ที่สุดใบนี้ รัชกาลที่ 4 พระราชทานให้แก่ "กัปตันบุช" (ข้าราชบริพารชาวอังกฤษ เข้ามารับราชการสนองเบื้องพระยุคลบาทพระเจ้าแผ่นดินไทยถึงสองพระองค์ คือ ร.4-5) แล้วก่อนหน้าที่พบ ส.ค.ส.แผ่นนี้ ก็เคยได้อ่านงานเขียนของ เอนก นาวิมูล เกี่ยวกับประวัติการส่งบัตรอวยพรปีใหม่ หรือ ส.ค.ส.ของไทยสันนิษฐานว่าหลักฐานเก่าที่สุดที่พบเป็นบัตรพระราชทานพรปีใหม่ ที่ ร.4 ทรงพิมพ์และส่งไปยังกงสุล และมิตรสหายชาวต่างประเทศ ประเทศต่างๆ ลงวันที่ 1 มกราคม ค.ศ. 1866 (พ.ศ. 2409)

Scientists are always looking for ways to predict earthquakes.If an accurate prediction can be made far enough in asvance, people can be told to leave the area, and lives can be saved.Japan is one of the major earthquake areas in the world. You could say the japanese are "earthquake professionals." So it is not surprising to learn that they have noticed a relationship between animals behavior and earthquakes.Just before the 1855 eqrthquake, a fisherman reported nervous catfish. They swam to and from in the water as though they were restless or anxious. The fisherman saw this as a sign of an oncoming quake. He hurried home and managed to save his family minutes before the tremor struck.So the scientists got busy. In the 1930's, Professor Hatai at Tohoku University set an experiment. He watched the behavior of catfish in the laboratory tanks. Day after day, the catfish remained calm. They did not even react to finger tapping on the table that held their tank. Hatai noticed, however, that in 80 percent of the cases they became jumpy six to eight hours before an earthquake. Hatai believes that catfish are somehow sensitive to electrical currents in the earth. These currents change before earthquiake activity.( From "Concentrate of Critical Reading")

องุ่นเป็นผลไม้ที่มีรสชาติดี ทั้งรสหวาน เปรี้ยว มีขายทั่วไป ปลูกกันมากกว่า ๕,๐๐๐ ปี สามารถเจริญเติบโตได้ดีทั้งในเขตหนาว เขตกึ่งร้อนกึ่งหนาว และเขตร้อน สำหรับประเทศไทยไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานแน่ชัดว่านำเข้ามาในสมัยใด แต่พอจะเชื่อได้ว่าในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๕ พระองค์ท่านได้นำพันธุ์ไม้แปลกๆ จากต่างประเทศที่ได้เสด็จประพาสมาปลูกในประเทศไทย และเชื่อว่าในจำนวนพันธุ์ไม้แปลกๆ เหล่านั้นน่าจะมีพันธุ์องุ่นรวมอยู่ด้วยในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๗ มีหลักฐานยืนยันว่าเริ่มมีการปลูกองุ่นกันบ้างแต่ผลองุ่นที่ได้มีรสเปรี้ยว การปลูกองุ่นจึงซบเซาไป ต่อมาในปี ๒๔๙๓ ได้เริ่มมีการปลูกองุ่นอย่างจริงจัง โดย หลวงสมานวนกิจ ได้นำพันธุ์มาจากแคลิฟอร์เนีย และปี ๒๔๙๗ ดร.พิศ ปัญญาลักษณ์ ได้นำพันธุ์มาจากยุโรปซึ่งปลูกได้ผลเป็นที่น่าพอใจ นับแต่นั้นมาการปลูกองุ่นในประเทศไทยจึงแพร่หลายมากขึ้น

เราเชื่อกันว่านํ้าหอมนั้นเกิดขึ้นมานานแล้ว จากหลักฐานภาพวาดจิตรกรรม ฝาผนังตอนหนึ่งที่วิหารของพระราชินี Hatshepsut ที่เมือง Thebes ในประเทศ Egypt
ที่เป็นรูปของหญิงสาวชาวอิยิปต์โบราณกำลังโชลม นํ้าหอมลงบนศรีษะ ซึ่งได้แสดงให้เห็นว่ามีการใช้นํ้าหอม กันแล้วในยุคนั้น ซึ่งคาดว่านักเดินเรือชาวอิยิปต์ได้ไปนำมาจาก ดินแดนอื่น

1. น้องต้องหาหนังสือมาอ่านครับ จะสอบผ่าน จะทำเกรดให้ได้ ก็ต้องอ่านหนังสือ ไม่มีวิธีการเตรียมตัววิธีใดดีกว่าการอ่านหนังสือ อ่าน อ่าน อ่าน ให้มาก จะอ่านยังไงให้เข้าใจ
2. อ่านแล้วต้อง จด จด จด โน๊ตไว้ด้วยครับ เพื่อว่าวันหลังจะได้ไม่ต้องมาเปิดหนังสืออีก จดโน๊ตย่อเอาไว้ อ่านวันหลัง เก็บเป็นโน๊ตรวบรวมเอาไว้ จะได้เป็นสมบัติของตัวเอง
3. ทำข้อสอบเก่าๆ ไว้บ้าง ข้อสอบ Admission ทั้ง A-net และ O-net พี่ว่าไม่แตกต่างไปจากข้อสอบ Ent มากนักหรอก ลองเอาข้อสอบEnt ย้อนหลังสัก 5 พ.ศ. มาลองทำดู ก็จะได้แนวข้อสอบเอง ไม่ยากหรอกครับ ค่อยๆ ทำจากข้อง่ายไปยาก เปิดดูเฉลยก็ได้ ไม่มีใครว่าหรอกค่อยๆเรียนรู้จากข้อสอบเก่าไปเรื่อยๆ จะทำให้เรามั่นใจเองครับ
4. ให้กำลังใจตัวเอง และลงมือทำอย่างมุ่งมั่น กำลังใจสำคัญมาก ถามว่าจะได้รับจากใคร ไม่มีหรอกครับ กำลังใจจากตัวเองนั่นแหละสำคัญที่สุด ให้รางวัลกับตัวเองบ้างเมื่ออ่านไปได้สักบท ก็พักบ้าง ที่สำคัญคือ กำลังใจจะทำให้เราเกิดความมุ่งมั่น ทำต่อไปอย่างไม่มีวันเลิกแล้วจะรู้สึกสนุกในการทำ เหมือนกับคนที่ชอบออกกำลังกาย ถ้าวันไหนไม่ได้ออกก็จะรู้สึกหงุดหงิด อยากจะบอกว่า ข้อสุดท้าย สำคัญมากกว่าทุกข้อ ถ้าไม่มีกำลังใจ ไม่ลงมือทำ ไม่ทำด้วยตัวเอง อ้างโน่นอ้างนี่ ข้อ 1 - 3 ก็จะไม่เกิดอย่างแน่นอนสุดท้ายจริงๆ อยากให้นึกภาพวันที่คุณพ่อคุณแม่จะภาคภูมิใจมากที่สุดในชีวิต คือวันที่ลูกได้รับปริญญาครับ วันที่น้องได้ถ่ายรูปร่วมกับคุณพ่อคุณแม่และทุกคนในครอบครัว วันนั้นคือวันที่คุณพ่อคุณแม่หายเหนื่อย และมีความสุขที่สุด

The rose has always been valued for its beauty and fragrance and has a long history of symbolism and meaning. The ancient Greeks and Romans identified the rose with their goddesses of love (Aphrodite and Venus). In Rome a wild rose would be placed on the door of a room where confidential matters were discussed. The phrase sub rosa, or "under the rose", means to keep a secret—derived from this ancient Roman practice.
Early Christians identified the five petals of the rose with the five wounds of Christ. Despite this interpretation, their leaders were hesitant to adopt it because of its association with Roman excesses and pagan ritual. The red rose was eventually adopted as a symbol of the blood of the Christian martyrs. Roses also later came to be associated with the Virgin Mary.
Rose culture came into its own in Europe in the 1800's with the introduction of perpetual blooming roses from China. There are currently thousands of varieties of roses developed for bloom shape, size, fragrance and even for lack of thorns.

นักดาราศาสตร์ได้ตั้งข้อสงสัยมาเป็นเวลานานแล้วว่าบนดวงจันทร์ไททันของดาวเสาร์อาจมีแหล่งของเหลวที่มีมีเทนหรืออีเทนเหลวอยู่ โดยเฉพาะในพื้นที่หนาวเย็นเช่นบริเวณใกล้ขั้วดาว

La formidable aventure lunaire de Tintin est pré-publiée en continu à partir de mars 1950 dans le Journal Tintin belge (à partir de mai dans le Journal Tintin français). Elle est déclinée en deux albums Objectif Lune et On a marché sur la lune, parus respectivement en 1953 et 1954.
Si les différences entre la parution dans la presse et dans les albums sont significatives, les éditions de Casterman n'ont pas été sensiblement modifiées au cours du temps. Hergé, aidé de ses Studios, réalisait un premier coloriage pour l'hebdomadaire, au fur et à mesure de la publication. Il en refaisait un deuxième pour l'édition en album. Mais cette fois d'une traite, pour garantir la cohérence et après avoir effectué les aménagements jugés nécessaires, en particulier suite aux remarques des lecteurs les plus attentifs.
Assez curieusement, les coloriages des deux titres publiés par Casterman sont un peu différents. Le rouge de la fusée, en particulier, a été réchauffé dans l'ensemble du deuxième album et apparaît donc plus orangé. Cette caractéristique des éditions originales a toujours été maintenue.

Tintin
(1946 - 1988)
Tintin was the Belgian magazine for realistic comics during the second half of the 20th Century. It brought forth legendary series such as 'Blake & Mortimer', 'Alix', 'Ric Hochet' and of course 'Tintin et Milou'. The first issue appeared in 1946 and the magazine ran until its final rendition in 1993. The title character, 'Tintin', was created back in 1929 for Le Petit Vingtième by the Belgian artist Georges Rémi, also known as Hergé and was already extremely popular. The idea for a magazine came up after a meeting between Hergé and the Belgian publisher Raymond Leblanc. After dealing with the financial aspects, Leblanc founded the publishing house Lombard and one of Belgium's most prestigious comic magazines was born. Soon a Flemish version followed, titled 'Kuifje'.

From the first issue of 26 September 1946, a team of talented artists was formed to fill the magazine's pages. Among the first cooperators, besides Hergé, were Edgar Pierre Jacobs, Paul Cuvelier and Jacques Laudy. Cuvelier put out the historical 'Corentin' series, while Jacobs took on his successful science fiction series 'Blake & Mortimer'. In the following years, Hergé restarted the 'Jo, Zette et Jocko' series, which first appeared in Coeurs Vaillants. Although Tintin primarily contained realistic work, Étienne Le Rallic provided a humorous variation with 'Jojo Cow-Boy' and 'Teddy Bill'. Jacques Martin joined in 1948 and created the famous 'Alix' series. At the same time, Dino Attanasio and Willy Vandersteen contributed their work.

For several decades, Hergé kept artistic control over the magazine. A striking example of his interferences is Willy Vandersteen's 'Bob et Bobette' ('Suske en Wiske') series. This typical Flemish comic had to be rebuilt and drawn in a more Clear Line style. While the magazine gained popularity in Belgium, Raymond Leblanc contacted the French publisher Georges Dargaud to start a French version. In October 1948 the first French issue appeared. The Belgian and French version mostly published the same comics, but there were (mainly editorial) distinctions. Bob De Moor, who already drew for the Flemish Kuifje, joined Tintin in 1949 and drew several gag pages.

Walt is said to have drawn the first sketches of Mickey Mouse on a train to Los Angeles after losing the rights to Oswald, the cartoon rabbit. Viewed from a distance of over 70 years, it appears that Mickey's success was inevitable, that he was a kind of force of nature in entertainment, destined to become one of the most beloved characters in the world. But the truth isn't so simple. In fact, Mickey Mouse could easily have become just another character in the history of animation, joining the likes of Popeye, Betty Boop, and Felix the Cat. In fact, when Mickey was first created he didn't look so very different from many of his predecessors. Clearly, the most significant factor that led to Mickey's super-stardom was his optimistic, cheerful, resilient character -- one very much like Walt's. It may be true that animator Ub Iwerks was largely responsible for Mickey's final form -- reworking Walt's sketches to make the mouse easier to animate. But as old animators have commented, according to animation historian Charles Solomon, "Ub designed Mickey's physical appearance, but Walt gave him his soul."

History of Winnie the Pooh

The story of Winnie the Pooh started when a young man, Harry Colebourn, saw a man cradling a tiny orphaned black bear cub, and bought it for $20. He was serving in the Canadian Army at the time. The bear, who Harry called Winnie after his hometown in Winnipeg, became the Canadian Army's mascot. After coming to England, Harry Colebourn and the other Canadian soldiers had to go to France, so Winnie was put in the care of London Zoo. When Lieutenant Colebourn came back from France, he found that Winnie was having such a wonderful time at the Zoo that he decided to let him stay there forever. Winnie lived until 1934.

Valentine's day

February 14 is Valentine's Day. Although it is celebrated as a lovers' holiday today, with the giving of candy, flowers, or other gifts between couples in love, it originated in 5th Century Rome as a tribute to St. Valentine, a Catholic bishop.
For eight hundred years prior to the establishment of Valentine's Day, the Romans had practiced a pagan celebration in mid-February commemorating young men's rite of passage to the god Lupercus. The celebration featured a lottery in which young men would draw the names of teenage girls from a box. The girl assigned to each young man in that manner would be his sexual companion during the remaining year.
In an effort to do away with the pagan festival, Pope Gelasius ordered a slight change in the lottery. Instead of the names of young women, the box would contain the names of saints. Both men and women were allowed to draw from the box, and the game was to emulate the ways of the saint they drew during the rest of the year. Needless to say, many of the young Roman men were not too pleased with the rule changes

Instead of the pagan god Lupercus, the Church looked for a suitable patron saint of love to take his place. They found an appropriate choice in Valentine, who, in AD 270 had been beheaded by Emperor Claudius.
Claudius had determined that married men made poor soldiers. So he banned marriage from his empire. But Valentine would secretly marry young men that came to him. When Claudius found out about Valentine, he first tried to convert him to paganism. But Valentine reversed the strategy, trying instead to convert Claudius. When he failed, he was stoned and beheaded.
During the days that Valentine was imprisoned, he fell in love with the blind daughter of his jailer. His love for her, and his great faith, managed to miraculously heal her from her blindness before his death. Before he was taken to his death, he signed a farewell message to her, "From your Valentine." The phrase has been used on his day ever since.
Although the lottery for women had been banned by the church, the mid-February holiday in commemoration of St. Valentine was still used by Roman men to seek the affection of women. It became a tradition for the men to give the ones they admired handwritten messages of affection, containing Valentine's name.
The first Valentine card grew out of this practice. The first true Valentine card was sent in 1415 by Charles, duke of Orleans, to his wife. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London at the time.
Cupid, another symbol of the holiday, became associated with it because he was the son of Venus, the Roman god of love and beauty. Cupid often appears on Valentine cards.

The ancient Chinese named the Chrysanthemum ("chu hua"), to be their official Flower for October, and also the official badge of the Old Chinese Army. Mums were considered one of the four Chinese noble plants… along with bamboo, the plum, and the orchid, and therefore the lower class Chinese were not permitted to grow them in their gardens.
Visiting Buddhist monks brought the chrysanthemum to Japan in AD 400. Japanese emperors so loved this flower that they sat upon chrysanthemum thrones, and kikus, chrysanthemums in Japanese, were featured on the Imperial Crest of Japan.
Even today, the chrysanthemum is a symbol of the sun, and the orderly unfolding of the mum's petals denotes perfection. One of their traditions is to put a single chrysanthemum petal on bottom of a wine glass to sustain a long and healthy life.
This popular perennial's name is derived from the Greek chrysos (gold) and anthos (flower). In Italy chrysanthemums are associated with death, so don’t give an Italian girl friend a bouquet of chrysanthemums!
